Dr. Justine Daudi Maganira is a Senior Lecturer in Parasitology at the Department of Biosciences, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania. He obtained his doctoral education in 2020 from the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden. Before that, he earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Dar es Salaam.
Dr. Maganira’s primary responsibilities at the Sokoine University of Agriculture include teaching, research, and outreach activities related to neglected tropical diseases caused by animal parasites in livestock. He specializes in diagnosing, epidemiology, and integrated control of neglected tropical parasitic infections, mainly focusing on diseases such as Taenia solium taeniasis, cysticercosis, and helminthiases in livestock, including zoonotic agents. He has been involved in various research projects, including studies on the epidemiology of ascariasis, echinococcosis, and Taenia solium porcine cysticercosis in Tanzania. These projects have received funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and involved collaboration between the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. In June 2021 and July 2022, Dr. Maganira, in partnership with researchers from the University of Dar es Salaam, conducted a ‘Public Health Education Programme’ on Taenia solium cysticercosis in Kongwa and Mpwapwa districts in Dodoma. This program aimed to raise awareness and educate the local communities about the zoonotic parasite and its role in causing acquired epilepsy. Currently, Dr. Maganira is actively involved in teaching courses related to parasitology, medical entomology, and invertebrate zoology at the Department of Biosciences. He has supervised the research projects of over 30 undergraduate students and has also supervised one Master of Science student. Dr. Maganira has contributed to the scientific community through his publications. He has published eight scientific papers in refereed journals and authored two conference papers, reflecting his research findings and expertise in parasitology and neglected tropical diseases.
