Dr. Silvia Materu studied Bachelor of Science with Education (Majoring in Chemistry and Biology) and Master of Integrated Environmental Management at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). She did her Ph.D. in water quality and ecotoxicology at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg in collaboration with the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW-Hamburg) in Germany. Materu has worked with local NGOs and a number of consulting firms on issues related to environmental risk assessment, environmental conservation, chemical management, occupational safety, green production, and climate change. Since 2008, Materu has been working with Sokoine University of Agriculture and teaches environmental toxicology, occupational health hazards and safety practices (to undergraduates), and environmental safety, health, and management (to postgraduates). Within the field of aquatic toxicology, Materu is interested in the effects of environmental contaminants on the aquatic community and biodiversity, with a strong focus on sediments and water quality.
