Science, technology and innovation are the key drivers of our increasingly global and digital society. For girls and young women to thrive in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, they need safe and reliable access to digital tools. In line with the International Girls in ICT Day that will be celebrated on 28 April, YEESI Lab and the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) conducted a 1 day event with students from Kilakala secondary school on 9th April 2022 at SUA. The organisers of this event at SUA are Dr. Alcardo Alex Barakabitze and Prof. Camilius Sanga in collaboration with TCRA. The aim of this event was to encourage girls and young women to pursue science, technology and engineering education and work in STEM careers. The main topic of the event focused on demonstrating to students from Kilakala secondary school the uses of ICTs and its impacts in the agriculture industry. Two female ICT scientists from SUA, Dr. Neema Sumari, Ms Joan Jonathan and Dr. Neema Nicodemus presented their topics regarding “ICT for Future Smart World” and “Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine learning (ML) in agriculture” respectively. Dr. Kadeghe Fue also presented the smart technology for precision agriculture, where a robotic solution for cotton harvesting was demonstrated. The TCRA at this event was represented by the Principal ICT officer, and Eng. Aneth Kilaja.
