Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) is set to host its first-ever Academic Staff Lecture Series on February 19, 2025, at the ICE Conference Hall, Edward Moringe Campus, starting at 14:00. This initiative aims to provide a platform for recently graduated PhD and Master’s academic staff to share their PhD/Master’s research insights with the university community. Among the speakers is Dr. Theofrida Maginga from the Department of Informatics and Information Technology, who will present on “Convergence of IoT, AI, and Natural Language Processing to Support Low-Literacy Rural Farmers in Early Detection of Crop Diseases: A Case Study of Maize in Tanzania.”

Dr. Maginga’s PhD research addressed the pressing challenge of crop disease detection among smallholder maize farmers, integrating Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to create accessible solutions for those with limited literacy. Faculty members, researchers, and students are encouraged to attend this insightful session and engage with the university’s emerging scholars.
