On Monday, November 6, 2023, the Zanzibar campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras was inaugurated in the presence of Tanzanian officials, Indian dignitaries, faculty, and students. IIT Madras Zanzibar is an IIT’s first international campus. Prof. Sanga, Acting Director of the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), represented the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) on behalf of SUA Vice Chancellor Prof. R. T. Chibunda.
During the launch of IIT Madras in Zanzibar Campus, there was an opportunity to network with other officials from Tanzanian (SUZA, NM-AIST, MJNUAT) and international universities.
The programmes which have been launched at IIT Madras Zanzibar are Bachelor of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and MTECH in Data Science & AI. Their use of a project-based learning (PBL) distinguishes these curricula approach. There are projects for each semester using the PBL, as well as internships and industrial attachments to reputable companies all over the world.
Other distinguishing characteristics of IIT curriculum include: curriculum based on education/curriculum theories, strong fundamentals, hands-on learning, creativity and innovation, prevention of knowledge fragmentation, and connection to society.
